About these statistics

This is how we define these numbers, and how we generate them:

Visitors in the last hour
A variation on "Visits last month" (see below), this is the number of visits we've had in the last hour. This number also gets updated every few minutes.

Different countries from which people visited us last week
This is the total number of countries from which people visited us over the last week. You can see the list of countries by clicking here.

Visits last month
Each "visit" to a site—also called a "user session"—represents one person entering that site and using it for a few seconds or for several hours. The visit ends when that person stops clicking on the site for a number of minutes. To track our visits and page views we use a free software package called AWStats.

Pages viewed last month
Each "page" represents a whole screen viewed by a user. This can be a search page, a page with results, or a simple text page like this one. A single page can contain many files—logos, photographs, etc.—and when that page is viewed, each of these separate files generates a "hit" on that site. Therefore, hits can become an almost meaningless number, and page views are now the standard measure for gauging a site's usage.

Other sites linking to us
If you go to Google and search for link:www.idealist.org (or for link:www.yoursite.org) you will see all the sites that Google has found that link to that site. Even Google can't find every site that links to yours, but this number can give you a good sense of how many people link to you.
